In the program, the singer born in 1977 had a battle performance with two singers Nguyễn Trần Trung Quân, Hoàng Tôn with the song Hai con thằn lằn con. For this song, there was no specific singing style required, singers were free to choose their own style of interpretation.
During the performance, Thu Minh wanted to bring a different version to the children's song, so she changed from a cheerful singing style to a more painful one.
"The original version of this song is cheerful, but now I have turned this song into a sad one. I will share the pain and the tailless story with the two little lizards, can I?" she said on stage.
In the battle round, Thu Minh surprised the audience by performing Hai con thằn lằn con with a sad style, accompanied by vocal techniques, and her distinctive vocal texture.
However, this performance of Thu Minh led to many conflicting opinions from the online community. Many thought that the female singer had overly exaggerated the technique when singing, taking away the simplicity and innocence of a children's song.
In response to the criticism, singer Thu Minh stated: "The singer was inspired by the band for Soul, Jazz genres about the song 'two lost-tail lizards'. If understood, it will be enjoyable and good. If not understood and only remember the original children's version, then I was wrong to sing a children's song without resembling a child. It's completely my fault, being criticized is natural. If people want to criticize, let them do it so that I can learn from it, but with a civilized spirit."
The singer also explained that at first, she was quite confused when asked to perform the song Hai con thằn lằn con. She believed that her voice was only suitable for performing songs with personality and unique colors.
However, at that time, she was encouraged by Pharmacist Tiến and Hương Giang to just sing in her personal style to provide more professional analysis.
Listening to the advice of her juniors, Thu Minh responded: "I will transform Hai con thằn lằn con into a Soul, Jazz style, playing on any chord, improvising and transforming. That's what true artists and singers do in a battle. Soul and Jazz music are not well understood nowadays but if you want to understand, just search on Google."
